This jacket will be for sale!
These photos are a very tiny peek at the items I will be selling. I have so much to bring that I actually bought a hand truck to cart it all into the venue!

I will be selling these ASOS pants.  I wore them in this post.
Both of these skirts (Nordstrom) will be for sale. They have only been worn a couple times (blue worn here).
This seer sucker jacket (Talbots) and these shoes (Talbots) will be for sale.
This ear cuff and many other pieces of jewelry will be available.
I'm bringing some big brand names to the sale. I've got shoes from Michael Kors, Via Spiga and BCBG Paris. There are tops from Lane Bryant, Talbots, and Avenue. Pants from ASOS and Talbots. Frugal Fashion Friday - The Four L's of Thrifting

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is... "How do you find such great things at thrift stores?".  I've written other posts on tips for thrifting. Those tips still hold true and make for a great thrifting experience. For me, finding great items, really comes down to four things. They aren't difficult and you don't have to thrift every day or even every week to find great items.

Location....Like....Look....Luck

Location - A thrift or resale store in a good location is important. I find that the best stores are on the edge of expensive neighborhoods. The area of the thrift store isn't necessarily prime real estate but proximity to a ritzy neighborhood means that a charity thrift store will get great donations. My favorite thrift store is close to an older, well off, neighborhood. There are many folks who have owned their houses for decades and they donate amazing items. I've found Diane von Furstenberg, Ferragamo, Coach (vintage), Armani and vintage jewelry there, just to name a few. They also have great furniture (high quality and antique). Sometimes you may find that you'll want to go to multiple stores for the best finds. One store might have a great shoe selection, while another has the best career wear.

Like - Know what you like and hunt for those items first. I go straight for the handbags, shoes, and jewelry, then I will hit up the clothing (I love vintage rock and slogan tees) and home goods (for vintage glassware). If you know what you like, you should do research in advance. I love vintage Coach bags. I've done lots of research on how to spot a fake. Nothing is worse than wasting your money. If you love vintage clothing, know your labels and the signs of quality. Don't be afraid to do research on the spot. Pull out your smart phone and look up information about a tag, label or marking. Having knowledge about brands you like will also serve you well. That information will help you to know fit and spot knockoffs. Knowing what you like will help to weed out the impulse purchases too. In the past I have been known to buy an item and then redonate it a short time later. That's not a bargain.

Two of my favorite finds, Ferragamo shoes and a vintage red suede Coach bag. Found at Goodwill.
Recent finds at Goodwill.
Look - Be willing to search. Digging is thrifting. Look at every piece in a section, even if at a glance they don't look great. Move the hangers, check tags. If I hadn't used this method I wouldn't have found the Diane von Furstenberg dress that I scored (and gave to my daughter in law as a gift). I moved each hanger on the rack and {msL} commented that none of the dresses looked good. Like a scene from a movie, I said, "Well you never know when you are going to find a gem."  At that moment I moved a hanger and spotted a great print dress in a high quality fabric. I pushed the neckline aside to see the Diane von Furstenberg label and I think I let out a few excited expletives. My favorite way to thrift is to take my time but I also stop at some of my favorite stores during my lunch break. On those days, I start by focusing in one area and I search through everything before heading to the next area (if there is time). Try stopping by your favorite store the evening before their sale day. Most stores put out their latest donations the night before.

DVF silk jersey dress for $8! Found at Goodwill.

Luck - Knowing and using the other L's is great but many times, it's just luck. You are lucky that the person donated a great item. Lucky that you came into the store and spotted it before someone else. You can't plan for luck. Getting to know your favorite store helps but it doesn't replace destiny. My wish is that the thrifting gods are smiling on you and you'll have lots of great finds. I've been lucky that way.

I hope these tiny tips have helped you. I'm off to the thrift store at lunch today to look for my Halloween costume. Wish me luck!

Frugal Fashion Friday - Discounts on Beauty Items

Last year I did a post about saving on fashion and online shopping.  In the post I was a critical of the people on the TLC show "Extreme Couponing".  I've always been one to admit when I'm wrong. While I still don't understand stock piling items you'll never use, I have changed my mind and thinking on using coupons at grocery and drugstores.  Financially things have been tight for us for the past year or so.  I know it's been tough for lots of people.  But I decided to do some things to reduce our grocery and drugstore budget. When I first started watching the show, I thought the people featured were over the top. I soon realized that I could use some of their strategies, on a much smaller scale, to save on my regular grocery and drugstore runs.  I didn't have any illusion that I'd get $3,000 worth of groceries for $10.  I thought if I could save a large percentage, maybe $50 or more on an average shopping trip, I'd be thrilled.  I started by clipping coupons from the Sunday paper and matching them with store deals. I also read local blogs to get the scoop on other deals. My favorites in the DC area are Beltway Bargain Mom and Capitally Frugal. There are great blogs in every area. Just do a search to find some close to you.

I've started regularly using beauty item coupons at CVS and matching those deals to earn CVS Extra Care Bucks (ECB). CVS has a fairly liberal coupon policy.  They also have a money back guarantee on beauty products. Have you ever bought a new tube of lipstick, just to get it home and hate it? Have you bought the wrong foundation?  Their guarantee covers, cosmetics, skin, healthy skin, sun care, hair care, hair accessories, hair color, ethnic hair care, and fragrance. You can return your product for a full refund within 60 days. They also have a Beauty Club. Just link your CVS card to the Beauty Club.  You'll get a 10% off coupon just for signing up.  For every $50 in beauty products you purchase you get $5 in Extra Care Bucks. You can also earn Extra Care Bucks by purchasing certain amounts of products.

Yesterday I took a little trip to CVS. One of the things I always do when I walk into CVS is to scan my CVS Care Card at the coupon kiosk. Yesterday I got $5 in Extra Care Bucks and a coupon for $2 off of hair color. Using the coupons I'd clipped, sales that were going on at the store, and Extra Care Bucks (including the the $5 ECB I got that day), I purchased $73.31 worth of beauty products for $36.06 (before tax)!

Here is the tally...

At checkout I also received a $10 CVS Cash Card (like a gift card) and another $5 in Extra Care Bucks. I got these by completing two deals. The first was to purchase $30 worth of certain products and get a $10 card.  The second was to purchase $15 in John Frieda products and get $5 in Extra Care Bucks. I'd purchased a portion of both of these deals in previous shopping trips. My purchases yesterday completed those deals and earned me the card and ECBs.  The greatest part is that the dollar amount used to calculate those deals is taken prior to any coupons you use.  I needed $12 in John Frieda products to complete the $15 needed for the $5 ECB.  I got two products totalling $12, then used $4 in coupons, paying $8 and got $5 in ECBs for a future purchase.  You can use as many ECB coupons as you'd like in an order and you don't have to make a minimum purchase to use them.

I don't spend tons of time every week clipping coupons.  I get a few copies of the Sunday paper. In the DC area we get our coupons on Saturday. I sort though and pull the ones that are for products we use.  Then on Sunday or Monday evening, while watching guilty pleasure TV, I clip coupons. I wouldn't consider myself an extreme couponer but it sure does feel good to get products at a huge discount. One of my most exciting CVS trips was when I purchased a couple of hair products and a magazine and paid only $.19!  Yes, you read that correctly, 19 cents!  On top of that I also got $5 in Extra Care Bucks.  Using coupons, store deals and ECBs, I paid 19 cents and had $5 to spend on my next purchase. Who doesn't love free or discount beauty products?!

My couponing journey has been aided by some good friends who share stories, tips, and coupons.  This post is for you, Marissa, Denise, and David!

HAPPY FRIDAY REAL GIRLS!!

Full Disclosure Note:  The opinions expressed are my own. I did not receive any compensation from CVS or any of the product companies featured.

Frugal Fashion Friday - My Recent Thrift Store Haul

My love of thrifting is no secret.  I think it's an amazing way to find one of a kind items without breaking the bank. You know the old saying, "One girl's trash is another girl's treasure."  Yeah I know the original saying used "man" but this is Real Girl Runway. I have hit the jackpot lately on my thrift store runs.

For the last few years, My Honey and I have been giving homemade gift baskets to friends and family for the Holidays.  We spend the week before Christmas making all sorts of goodies and then assemble decorated baskets to give.  This year, all of the baskets we are using came from the thrift store!  We got unique baskets and bins for just a few dollars a piece.

The first weekend in December my sister and I went to a fun event at Goodwill in Maryland.  My friend the DC Goodwill Fashionista hosted a Holiday get together. We got to shop the store before it was open to the public. My sister got a pair of suede pants for only $7!  I found a lavender boucle jacket (so Chanel) for $6 and  a vintage leather and suede Coach bag (80's vintage) for only $19!! It's a style that they don't make any longer, which makes the find even more exciting.

When decorating for the Holidays this year, I decided to change it up a bit.  We don't have a large tree. We use a fun table top, silver and fiber optic tree.  It's perfect for us and we love the colors.  The colorful tree inspired me to decorate the house in a blue and silver palette this year.  I went to Goodwill and found a bunch of mismatched candlesticks and a tray that I'm going to paint silver.

Once I'm finished with the decorating, I'll do a little post to show you how I've incorporated all of my Goodwill finds.

Frugal Fashion Friday - Favorite Bargain Sites

Shopping is one of my favorite past times but truth be told I haven't been doing much of it lately.  I have tightened my budget and am being extremely frugal with my purchases. I've started recycling and revamping some clothing and shoes that I had stored away.  When shopping was an option, I've been hitting the thrift stores.  My stellar luck lately with finding not one but two pairs of Ferragamo heels, helps to keep my eye on the prize.  The goal is to save for and pay for a great wedding without going into debt.  My Honey and I both agree that wedding debt is not an option.  If we can't pay for it with savings or through the generosity of loved ones, it won't happen. Hence the reason for tight budgeting.

Clockwise from Top: Dress from ASOS, Pradas from DSW, Jacket and shoes from Talbots,
Bracelets from JewelMint, Rainboots from Forever 21

My purchases are frugal and well thought out.  Frugal doesn't always mean the least expensive option but it does mean a quality option for a good price. Cyber Monday is coming up soon and I'm sure there will be lots of bargains available.  I thought I'd share with you, some of my favorite online shopping sites and the reasons I love them.

Trendy Items - Forever 21
F21 has a great selection of clothing, shoes and accessories at amazingly affordable prices.  They even sell plus size clothing. Bargain prices are always mandatory for trendy items, ones that I will most likely only wear for a season or two, at least for me.  I just don't see the point in paying top dollar for an item I'll be tired of or that will look dated by this time next year.

European Style - ASOS
I've sung the praises of ASOS many times.  Their selection of fashion forward European style is fantastic.  I find great bargains and they have free shipping both ways (if you need to return).  Their selection of shoes, jewelry and plus size clothing is amazing. They only negative is that it can take a little longer for your items to arrive but they are coming from Europe, after all.  It's worth the wait.

Jewelry - JewelMint
The quality and amazing design of JewelMint jewelry has made me a loyal customer.  Each piece is $29.99 but many times, there are sets available where you get multiple pieces of jewelry for that price.  If you like them on facebook or follow them on twitter, you can also get discounts on single pieces and multiples. You've seen me wear JewelMint many times. They have something for everyone and a great price.

Classic Clothing - Talbots
If you are looking for beautifully tailored classic style, Talbots is a must.  They sell clothing is all sizes (petite to plus) and most of the items they sell are timeless.  I love their outlet stores but many of the items in the outlet stores are also being sold online. I've purchased amazing skirts and tops for less than $20!  For an item that I could wear for years, that is truly a bargain.

Plus Sizes - Fashion to Figure
There was a time that if you were in the plus size range, you could forget finding any dress that didn't look like a tent.  Times have changed, my friends, thanks to amazing stores like Fashion to Figure.  They sell fantastic clothing and there is nary a muumuu in sight! The clothing is stylish, fashion forward and affordable. It flatters women of all shapes and sizes (from 12 - 26).  I'll be doing a review of their clothing soon. I'm in love!

Shoes - DSW
Their selection and range of options is great.  They have great sales and you can use up to three coupon codes on one order!  Returns are a breeze because you can return an item via mail or to a store. Many of the items online can be found in their stores and vice versa.  I always check the sale pages before I go into the new items.  I've gotten some great bargains, including my find of the century, navy blue satin Pradas (pictured above).

These are just a few of my favorites.  Which online shopping sites do you love and why?

I set this post up in advance because I'm on a long weekend trip with my Mom and sister to The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina.  I'll be posting pictures all weekend on facebook and twitter.  Be sure to follow me.

Frugal Fashion Friday - Not So Cheap Bargains

You all know I love a great bargain. Most times I will choose the bargain option over quality if it's a trendy item. However, there are things (products and services) that I choose to spend more money on because the quality is worth it to me.  These items perform better, last longer and provide a better value in the long term than the cheap version. For me that makes them "Not So Cheap Bargains".  They weren't inexpensive initially but their quality gives them value and makes them a bargain for the money.

#1 - Professional Hair Styling - Cut and Color
The best outfit in the world can take a down turn if your hair doesn't look good too.  A good haircut can last much longer than a sloppy cut or no cut at all.  I've believe that my hair is my best accessory. I'm adventurous with my hair. I don't hesitate to change it up. It's been half way down my back and Halle Berry short and every length in between.  When my hair is shaped and trimmed it takes less time to style and looks better. I've been almost every color, except black.  I'd love to dye streaks in my hair a crazy color like bright blue but it wouldn't work at my paying job. For many years I've colored my own hair and helped friends color theirs but I have made a few mistakes.  That drugstore savings doesn't compare to the value I get from good salon color.  The dyes are better, the application is done by a profesional and the results can't be equaled. Some hairdressers charge less, some more and color charges vary depending on the process.  If you don't color your hair. That's fantastic!  I've paid over $100 for a pair of shoes I wear occasionally.  Why wouldn't I spend that and more on my hair?  I wear my hair every day.

#2 - Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer
It's hard to explain my devotion to this product. It's amazing. I've battled under eye dark circles my entire life and tried every product that claims to help, hide or cure them.  They don't exist due to lack of sleep. They are hereditary. Even if I'm incredibly well rested, I still have them. I hate them so much that I never leave the house without concealer. This is the only product I've ever found that makes them seemingly disappear. One tube costs about $70.  Everytime I spend that money I cringe. However, I know I will only have to do that about every 10 - 12 months and I use it every day.  I purchased my current tube in April.  I still have about 1/2 of it left. 19¢ a day is a small price to pay to erase my dark circles.

I can't even believe that I'm posting this picture. This is my before Clé de Peau  picture. I must really want to share with you guys. I don't have any concealer under my eyes in this picture. None, nothing, zip, nada.

With Clé de Peau you don't even know I have those dark circles. It's my miracle product.

#3 - Foot Petals Tip Toes and Strappy Strips
You can buy high heel shoe cusions in every drug store today.  Ten years ago, that wasn't the case.  They had big clunkly soles but cushions for your stilettos and strappy sandals were much harder to find. I heard about Foot Petals and placed my first order. Since then I've tried other brands but for me, these are the best.  The material they are made from stays put, doesn't cause my feet to sweat (more than they already do) and they make uncomfortable shoes more confortable. They let me stand all night in shoes that used to be relegated to sitting only.  They wear very well and don't leave a gummy residue when you want to remove them. One pair of Tip Toes in shoes that you wear about once a week can last for years. That's a great cost per wear in my book. A pair of Tip Toes and a set of Strappy Strips cost $6.95 each or you can get multi packs for a discount.  I usually buy the three pack of Tip Toes for $10.95.  Also, you can sign up for their newsletter to get discounts or Google a discount code.  I found several 20% off coupons in one search. I don't think I've ever paid full price for an order from Foot Petals. If I did, they would be worth every penny.

#4 Dry Cleaning
The amazing blouse that you purchase at the thrift store for $3 isn't a bargain if it just sits in a bag waiting to be cleaned.  I can say this becuase I know.  I'm a dry clean procrastinator.  Until a one price dry cleaner opened in my neighborhood, I had a bag of clothes sitting in my closet waiting to be cleaned.  In reality I should have never bought those items in the first place if I wasn't prepared to pay for dry cleaning.  Wearing an item a couple times a year isn't a value no matter how much of a bargain it was.  If I want dry clean only items I have to be willing to spend the money or I leave them at the store.

#5 Eyebrow Maintenance
I subscribe to the same philosphy as Elle Woods. "Why let someone else do for you what you can do yourself -- except in the case of eyebrow maintenance."  There are lots of home products you can use to shape your brows.  They make it look fool proof. However, when you are doing them yourself, you don't have the same view as a professional.  You also don't have the same skill set.  For many years I only lightly plucked my brows on the edges to get rid of stray hairs. My mom gave me great brows.  Finally, I decided to have them shaped.  Pardon the pun but it was an eye opening experience.  I couldn't believe how great this simple procedure made my face look.  The shaping made my eyes look bigger and framed my face.  Depending on your body and how quickly your hair grows you can go months between shapings.  Occasionaly plucking can help extend your shape but for me, nothing compares to a professional. If you hate waxing there are other options, such as sugaring and threading.  I think checking for recommendations is important. It's worth your time. Years ago I had my brows done on a whim, by as woman I'd never used before.  They turned out looking like this...

They were much too thin for my face and they took forever to grow back.  It's worth it to me to spend the money and get them done professionally.

What do you think is worth the extra money?

A Little Vaca Purchase

I only did a tiny bit of shopping during our beach trip. Budget was mandatory this trip and my goal was to relax and enjoy time at the beach and have fun.

On Friday we took some time to hit a few shops. I wandered into the Bass outlet to look for some bargains. I saw these cream colored oxfords and swooned.

When it's 85 degrees outside and you are at the beach, oxfords aren't your focus. At a sale price of $59.99, I couldn't pass them by. They will be perfect year round. Cream colored patent leather, with two lace options (cream leather and black ribbon) and black soles. I had to make them mine.

Did I mention that they are still selling for $109.99 on the Bass website?

Frugal Fashion Friday: My All Kohl's Fashion Day

I know this post is a bit late but Blogger was down all night Thursday and into today. Here it is, late on Friday but it's still Frugal Fashion Friday.

How do I love thee Kohl's? Let me count the ways. There are so many reasons I love Kohl's. They have a large selection of clothes and styles in every size. Their brands pick up on the latest trends and their celebrity lines are fresh. Above all, their prices are good and they have great sales. I decided to create an outfit composed only of Kohl's finds, including jewelry.  Here are the results.

Jacket - Simply Vera Vera Wang (no longer available), Dress - Daisy Fuentes (found in store, this season),
Shoes - Simply Vera Vera Wang (no longer available)
Jacket - $30
Dress - $35
Shoes - $25
Necklace - $15
Bracelets - $9
Watch - $20 (sale plus Kohl's dollars)
TOTAL - $114

I've worn this jacket so many times since I purchased it a couple of years ago. My only regret is that I didn't buy it in the other color. The collar so cool. It has this amazing bungee chord that allows you to lay it flat or scrunch it for a different look. I also love the shape. It even has hidden pockets on the side seams that don't add bulk.

I know I'll be wearing this dress constantly. The ruching at the waist is flattering. The generous cut at the top means I can wear a regular bra. That's a bonus because I hate strapless bras. There's also no accidental cleavage and boob flashing. Double bonus!

I got these shoes last year. They were a season ahead of the flatform trend. They have a tiny slope but when I wear them I feel like I'm wearing flats.

Necklace - Simply Vera Vera Wang (no longer available), Bracelets - Candies and Abbey Dawn, Watch - Relic,
NOTE: The small chain bracelet and engagement ring are not Kohl's

I'm so happy with the results of my experiment. I felt so great wearing this outfit. I was comfortable all day.  I'm sure I could do this again with other items I own from Kohl's.  Are there stores or brands you could use for your own experiment?

Weekend Shopping Haul

Over the weekend, I did a little shopping with my mom, sister and my Honey.  It was a fun Saturday and I found some great bargains. We hit a few spots including, Avenue, Macy's and Lane Bryant. I thought I'd just keep an open mind and look for great bargains. I scored some awesome finds!

Clockwise from the Top Left: Shirt Dress - Lane Bryant, Calvin Klein Sweater - Macy's,
Sequin Tee - Macy's, Long Sweater Vest - Macy's, Sequin Pencil Skirt - Avenue
Last month, I saw Sarah of Style IT Online wearing the cutest sequin skirt. I'd also profiled one in the Friday's Fancies post I did last month for GalTime. I happened to find the same skirt that Sarah is wearing in her post, on the sale rack, for only $9!

Next stop was Macy's. I found an off white Calvin Klein silk sweater for 1/2 price, INC sequin tee for $19, and a feather weight, long, olive, sweater vest for $16.

Last stop was Lane Bryant. We were there to hunt for khaki pants for my Mom.  On a back rack, I found a sleeveless shirt dress in khaki for myself. The entire store was 40% off.  I got this season's dress for a steal!

It was a great day of girl time with my family as well as an awesome day for shopping. Have you found any good deals lately?

My Saving Grace - Thrifting and Remixing

A few days ago, I let you in on my dirty little shoe secret.  I really love to shop. Well, that should be, "I REALLY REALLY LOVE TO SHOP!"  My sister says that the word sale for me is like a call to arms. I think it's the thrill of the hunt that I enjoy.  The joys of Internet shopping didn't help me either.  I can't tell you how many clothes and shoes I've bought because at the time, I thought they were cute or liked them but in hind sight I wondered what I was thinking or drinking.  A few years ago, due to a break-up I found myself paying a large mortgage all alone. I put myself on a strict budget. For a year I didn't very little shopping.  It was hard but necessary. It also helped me to take a long hard look at my wardrobe and spending.

I've always loved searching a thrift store and the challenge of finding new ways to wear my clothes.  It's fun.  I started thrift store shopping in my early 20's when I had very little money and that mostly went to concerts and bars. I loved searching for those gems at a thrift or resale store.  I'm always shocked at what other people decide to donate or sell. I'm sure the same has been said about me. There were a few years where I didn't do much thrift shopping. I missed it, so I'm back to thrifting on a regular basis.

One of my other loves is activism.  Working with women who are restarting their lives after domestic violence was a real eye opener. It also caused me to rethink my life. I'm truly fortunate. The women I met had to start their lives over from scratch. Many left with only the clothes on their backs or just a suitcase. Volunteering my time as well as donating clothing and accessories to these organizations was a great way to give back. At least in this instance my poor shopping judgement turned into something positive.

Faced with those realities, thrifting combined with remixing is now the core of my wardrobe.

One Skirt Three Ways

This skirt was a thrift store find.  It was one of the items I picked when I did 30 for 30.  It's a great neutral color that goes with black, gray or blue. It's a little swingy and it's wash a wear. In every outfit above I'm wearing more than one item that was a thrift store or swap find.

Left to Right:

Outfit #1;  Blazer (men's from Goodwill), Skirt (Goodwill)
Outfit #2:  Boots (Finder's Keepers resale shop), Skirt (Goodwill)
Outfit #3:  Sweater Jacket (Frugal Fashionista Clothing Swap), Skirt (Goodwill)

Thrifting and remixing have helped me to curb my spending and be less wasteful.  It's also helped me to develop a wardrobe of treasured finds. Here are a few more of my favorite thrift store finds. These are a perfect example that if you do a little hunting you can find some amazing pieces. It's not all bad holiday sweaters and polyester suits.

Clockwise from top left:  Coach Handbag - Goodwill NYC, Cole Haan Elly wedges - Goodwill Falls Church,
Start Bracelet - Salvation Army Manassas, Whiting and Davis Handbag - Goodwill NYC

Are you a thrifter or a remixer?  I'd love to hear your stories.  Email me at: realgirlrunway@live.com, leave a comment or send a tweet @realgirlrunway.

Tips for the Thrifty

You all know about my love for thrift stores and resale shops. I have to confess that I haven't always viewed them as the storehouse of hidden treasures I do now.  I began thrift shopping in my twenties, when money was tight and I knew my creativity would come in handy. Over the years I've developed a strategy when it comes to thrifting and I thought I'd share some of my best tips with you, my blog friends.

1. Go shopping with a plan - Unless you have tons of time, you need to know what you're looking for that day. If you don't have a plan, you could end up buying things you don't need or want, just because they are a bargain. You may want a red, silk blouse. Determine what features are most important. Silk? Red? Style? That leads us to tip number 2.

2. Keep your mind and eyes open - You may have certain style, red, silk blouse in mind. The chances of finding that exact blouse are slim.  Determine what parts of that blouse you like most and look for those. By keeping your mind open, you may find something even better. By keeping your eyes open, you could also find a perfect skirt or pair of pants to wear with your new blouse. Classic styles are always in fashion.

3. Take cash - Many thrift and resale stores take credit or debit cards now but some don't. Check their policies by calling ahead. Cash will also help you stick to a budget and keep you from buying five shirts when you are only looking for one shirt. The reason you're thrifting is to save money.

4. Look for quality - A cashmere sweater by a quality label is a much better buy than a cotton sweater by a mass produced discount store. This is where keeping your mind and eyes open comes in handy. Check the seems for tight stitching, Check wool jackets, pants, and skirts for lining.

5. Check items carefully - That cashmere sweater won't be a bargain if you get it home and find a hole that can't be repaired or a stain that can't be cleaned. Check the care label. If you aren't willing to dry clean a garment, don't buy it. Look at the lining of vintage purses. If the lining is ripped and the leather is dusty or if the bag smells musty, it's not in good shape, don't buy it.  Check shoe heels, are they loose? If they are, leave them in the store.

6. Try on all clothing - Sizing fluctuates from decade to decade and depending on manufacturer. This is especially true of vintage items. Also, an item could have shrunk or stretched. If your store doesn't have a dressing room (most do), wear leggings and a tank top under your outfit, so it's easy to try something on quickly in the aisles.

7. Accessories are great bargains - Some of my greatest thrift store finds have been bags, scarves, belts, and jewelry. They are usually priced low and can change an entire outfit. You can wear a vintage bag with a brand new dress and give it a completely different vibe. You never have to worry about fit. You can try a belt on over our clothes.

8. Watch out for fakes - There are lots Coach, Kate Spade, and other designer fakes out there. Most thrift stores will sell them for the same price as the real items.  If you don't know the difference, you may get duped. Quality is the key difference between fake and real. Check the stitching, logos, seams, lining, hardware and materials. Check labels and attached logos. If they're attached with glue, it's a fake. A Coach bag for $10 isn't a bargain if it's pleather.

9. If you see something you like, grab it - If you walk away to think about an item, it might not be there when you come back. Someone else could grab it. If you change your mind, you can leave it at the store.

10. Wash or dry clean your new clothes before wearing - Even if the item has a fresh dry cleaning tag, it could have been packed with clothes that weren't clean. If an item is difficult to wash, like a tie or hat, I recommend putting it in a zip loc bag and storing it in the freezer for a few days. This will kill any germs or other things (like bed bugs).

11. Learn how to sew - I'm not recommending you become an accomplished seamtress. But knowing how to mend a pulled hem or seam or sew on new buttons, can come in handy.  You can make an old blouse or blazer look brand new with buttons.

12. Find a good tailor - You may find a fantastic pair of pants or a dress that needs a little altering. A high end designer dress that cost $300 new, cost $10 at the thrift store, $20 to alter and now fits you like a glove is still an incredible bargain.

13. Visit regularly - If you find a shop you like, make regular visits. You'll get to know the days that merchandise is replenished. Many stores also have discount days. They give a discount of 25% - 50% off of merchandise. You can also get to know the staff.  Their tips can be extremely helpful.
