Fall 2012 Runway Trends - Menswear

Sorry for the lack of posting. I've been and am still a bit under the weather.

There are only two trends left in our Fall 2012 Runway Trends series.  Today it's one of my all time faves, Menswear.  I love borrowing from the boys.  It's fun to wear oxfords and an occasional tie.  As much as I love dresses and skirts, pants are always comfortable.  The trick is wearing the menswear trend in a feminine way.  You can embrace the trend without looking like you are trying to be a man.

Fall 2012 Runway Fashion Trends - Menswear

When I am embracing menswear, I think it's best to start with the basics. You can never go wrong with a great fitting pair of pinstripe pants. A basic white button up shirt is a staple for menswear style as well. A tailored blazer can be worn with dress pants as well as with jeans or shorts. It's a polished piece that will pull your entire outfit together.

If you just want to add a touch of menswear, go for accessories. I own several pairs of oxfords and love them as an alternative to sneakers.  The new crop comes in tons of colors and styles, like this metallic pair with blue soles from Target.  If you love heels, you can grab a pair of heeled loafers or oxfords.  They work with skirts or pants.  A little over a year ago I was introduced to Ginger Root Designs.  They have a great little boutique in DC or you can check out their online shop.  These ladies create the most fantastic upcycled clothing and menswear style accessories for women.  I'm in love with their Lady Ties.  These fantastic accessories are created from old and damaged men's ties and sometimes vintage buttons.  Not into ties?  Throw on a newsboy cap or grab a cross body satchel.  This one, in oxblood, by The Leather Satchel Company has a top handle which gives it a briefcase feel.  Top it off with a large men's style wrist watch.  It lends that menswear feel without being overpowering.

With just a few additions, it's easy to sport the menswear trend.

Man of Style

Three years ago today my dad passed away after a long illness. I miss him every day. He made a huge impact on all who met and knew him.  His kindness and graciousness made you feel welcome and loved. He was always willing to share his knowledge with those who asked. My cousin says that he was the smartest man he's ever known.  I think that's because my dad was a life long learner. He loved to learn and was interested in everything.  He even surprised me once, when in his sixties, he proceeded to explain to my mom who Snoop Dog was. He was a very tall man (6'6") and despite the fact that clothes weren't always easy for him to find, he was a snappy dresser. But even though he had cool personal style, it was his personality and the way he carried himself that drew people to him.

Prep School

I love participating in challenges thrown down by other bloggers. It's such a creative community.  Kristina of Pretty Shiny Sparkly has created the Bloggers Do It Better movement.  She picks a styling challenge and then challenges the blogging community to be creative. The challenge this time is Prep School. The main requirement was that everyone had to wear a tie of some sort.  I love scoring mens' ties in the thrift store. The patterns are fantastic. Here is my take on Prep School.

One Dress, Endless Options

I love the idea of clothing that can be used in mulitple ways.  When I happened upon the Signature Wrap Dress in jersey designed by Butter by Nadia. I was in love. What's not to love about a dress you can wear so many ways?

Unfortunately, the price tag on this dress is $246.

After some searching I found a few budget friendly options. Victoria's Secrect has the Flirty Multi-Way Dress for $89. Designer Rachel Pally has designed a exclusive converible dress for Target. It comes in a purple print (only) for $79.99.

My personal choice is the Mossimo Multi Style Convertible dress at Target for $29.99!  It comes in purple, charcoal, deep love, and ebony.

The idea of figuring out the best ways to tie the dress as well as the right bra for each style is a bit daunting.  I think I can take a chance for $29.99.
