Jamberry - World's Easiest Nail Art

As I told you Monday, I'm hosting a Jamberry Black Friday event, online. Noel, Independent Jamberry Nail Consultant, was kind enough to send me some goodies. I love the pattern she sent, ICED. It's such a pretty blue green base with icicle like sparkles. Perfect for the chilly weather we have coming to the DC area today. Join me on Friday for some Black Friday fun. Grab some Thanksgiving leftovers and your fuzzy slippers, turn on your computer, and shop.

Love ICED!

Quality Bargains at Saks Off 5th

I purchase my share of discount fashion from stores like Target, Old Navy and Kohl's. I love these places for trendy items that I will likely only wear for a few seasons or staples, like basic t-shirts and tanks. Although I do have quite a few items from these stores that have held up for several years, the quality isn't the same as higher end designers and department stores. I've changed my way of thinking over the years. A $20 pair of shoes from a discount store isn't a bargain if they fall apart after a few wears. But a $60 pair of shoes that were purchased during a sale (originally $100) and last for years are a much better deal. They may have cost $40 more but if you are able to wear them for years, the cost per wear makes the extra cost worth the money. My favorite stores for high quality bargains are department store outlets, like Saks Off 5th.

The newly remodeled Saks Off 5th store opened on Thursday at Potomac Mills Mall. I was fortunate enough to attend a blogger preview event just prior to the grand opening. We got a tour of the store, a chance to see the great merchandise and do a little shopping.

Left to Right - Blogger friends Kristin of Handbags Hair and Heels and Katie of  Kurvy Katie

This store will serve as the model for other Saks Off 5th stores. It's larger than the previous store and has a more open floor plan. There is lots of great fashion to be had. I found a fantastic tweed and leather Ellen Tracy jacket and a fun color block sweater, that will be a perfect fall transition piece.

I was really disappointed that this store does not have a plus size section (like the previous store). I spoke with the store manager about this fact and expressed my disappointment. Regular Saks stores have Salon Z which contains great plus size fashion. I'll be writing to Saks corporate and expressing my disappointment to them as well. The Ellen Tracy jacket is so me. It was originally $169. I paid $65. My color block sweater was originally $89. I snagged it for only $21! Great deals on quality designer duds. The bag I'm carrying in these photos is the Rebecca Minkoff MAB (full size not mini) bag. I purchased it several years ago at Saks Off 5th for about $200, which at the time was better than half price. It's a quality bag that still looks fantastic and has stood the test of time. It was worth the investment. I choose quality over low cost, when the item is one I will wear over and over. I'm sure a similar low quality bag would have already been donated to Goodwill.

The shoe, accessory and handbag sections are stellar!

Chanel and Valentino

Hopefully, you live close enough to Potomac Mills to take advantage of the fantastic deals in person. live close to a Saks Off 5th, you can now shop online! In addition to the amazing fashion previews at bloggers events, another perk is the gifts we often receive. At this event, we were given a store gift card as well as a beauty box containing, Saks' BLACK line of cosmetics and beauty products (lip gloss, nail polish, body wash and perfume).

DC Fundraising Chic

Back in April I did a little guest post on GalTime for the Friday's Fancies feature. As part of that post, I did a frugal version of Friday's Fancies.  It was lots of fun shopping with an unlimited budget. Reality can be harsh but fun.  I enjoy hunting for bargains and this past Saturday, I wore my frugal version of Friday's Fancies to a fundraiser (with some slight modifications).

In my rush to leave the house, I forgot my camera, so these pictures were taken with a camera phone by my good friend and the Mayor of Occoquan, Earnie Porta. I'll be writing soon about the beautiful town and their great Craft Fair coming up June 4th and 5th.

The event I attended was an annual fundraising dinner put on by the Prince William County Democratic Committee.  I'm a member and attend each year. For many years I've worn a black satin ball skirt (with many different tops) that I purchased at Saks off 5th for $40. It was easily the best formal purchase I've ever made. It has been a great value.  The jacket I'm wearing in the photos below is the same kind of piece. It's an italian made, Gianfranco Ferre tuxedo jacket. The original price tag was over $500. I purchased it for $60 and I've worn it to formal events and with jeans and a tee out to a bar.

Tuxedo Jacket - Gianfranco Ferre via Saks off 5th, Top - AK via Nordstrom Rack, Skirt - Avenue,
Shoes - Prada via DSW, Watch - HSN, Earrings - Nordstrom Rack, Ring - DragonWeave Jewerly via Amazon

With the exception of hose, I wanted to wear sheer black and didn't own any, my entire outfit was already in my closet. Here is the cost breakdown:

Gianfranco Ferre Tuxedo Jacket - $60 (originally $500)
AK Ruffle Top - $15 (originally $59)
Avenue Sequin Skirt - $10 (originally $40)
Prada Satin Mary Janes - $89 (originally $500+)
Kenneth Cole Earrings - $11 (originally $30)
Watch - $59
Ring - $40

TOTAL - $284

Not bad considering I would have paid more, originally, for either the tuxedo jacket or the shoes.

I LOVE these shoes with a capital L but I don't wear them often. They kill my feet.  The classic example of comfort being all about how shoes fit your feet.  They don't fit my arch so I feel like I'm standing on the ball of my foot all night. I added some padding but it didn't help much. I still love them.

Your Wedding Your Way

Over the years I’ve attended bridal fairs with friends and been very excited for them.  I’ve always been the friend who helps with the wedding, gives advice, helps coordinate, and all in all is supportive.  I was thrilled to be on the planning and coordination team instead of the bridesmaid team.  You see, in my mind, I didn’t think I would be one of those women planning a wedding, so I just went along for the ride.  I never fit in at these shows and fairs because if I ever got to have a wedding, I’d be marrying Barbie, not Ken.

I don’t really fit into the traditional bride category for many reasons that include, being over forty, being plus sized, wanting to forge new traditions, and marrying a woman.  In other ways, I am traditional; I want a fun wedding with friends and family, a memorable day and I’m marrying my true love.  Until recently many wedding vendors haven’t been as friendly or excited for me once they discover that my groom is actually a bride and that I don't want to big white poofy wedding.

When I heard about The Nonconforming Bridal Fair, being held in Washington, DC, I was thrilled.  Imagine a Bridal Fair for the nonconforming, off beat, bride (and her bride)!  The event was developed by Tammy Freeman of Pink Dot Concepts.  Tammy is an off beat bride herself and wanted to create an event where all couples could feel welcome.  “This is a way to level the playing field,” she said.

Even with all of my excitement, I decided to hold my opinions until the event. It was a great day. The vendors there were many of the ones you'd expect at a wedding event, caterers, beauty professionals and photographers. However, they all had something special to offer. Debi Parker, one of the photographers at the fair, specializes in a journalistic style of photography with a focus on being green.  AK Henna Designs can do Mendhi for your wedding day, shower, or party. The DC Gurly show will perform burlesque for a bachelor and or bachelorette party that you'll never forget. If you need some advice on planning your unique and nontraditional day, be sure to check out Capitol Romance (http://www.capitolromance.com/). Bree and her husband Andy created their own nonconforming wedding full of personal touches and she's sharing her ideas with other brides.

Thanks to Pink Dot Concpets for providing a venue for nonconforming brides and great vendors to come together. Her goal is to join couples who want a unique day with vendors who are thrilled to be creative and think outside the box.

DC is a Fashion Town - 2011 Disctrict Sample Sale

Last night I had the opportunity to cover the 10th District Sample Sale for GalTime.com, Deacon Does DC and my little ol' blog too.  My fellow blogger friend McLean Robbins of Deacon Does DC usually covers the event. She had to be out of town on business and I took the fashion bullet for her, which is made out of faux fur and satin by the way.

Check out the coverage on Deacon Does DC and GalTime. Below is a slideshow of event photos.

I'm sure you all want to know if I got any bargains. Unfortunately, I'm not exactly in the smaller size range of many of the boutiques. I however, was undaunted by that fact and went in search of awesome shoes and accessories.  I got an amazing pair of shoes by Coclico from Simply Soles for 80% off!  Yes, that's right 80% off! I also got some killer jewelry from Mona Assemi and a beautiful illustration from Yanique. You can see her illustrations in the slide show above.

Here is a little net sneak peak of my awesome shoes. I'll be wearing them in an upcoming post.

Now rush on over to Deacon Does DC and read my coverage of the District Sample Sale!
